Michael is everyone’s favourite ice-cream maker. Hailing from Hermanus, he understands that he plays an important role in his community.
“It’s a privilege to serve a good product, at a good price, and to have the people come back again.”
Michael started his business in 1996 due to his love for ice-cream, and has since become a prominent figure in the community. When asked about how he survives during the off-peak season when ice-cream isn’t a hot commodity, he says that he does just fine. To him, his business does well if he always leaves his house; even if he only sells his ice-cream to one person that day, that pleases him.
“I can’t go anywhere in Hermanus. The kids always shout ‘mommy, there’s the ice cream man!’ When I’m off at work, I’ll have people asking ‘why are you walking on the beach? Why aren’t you selling your ice-cream?’ I’ll even have people asking me if I remember them. People love my ice cream and that makes me feel good.”
